China's Arctic and Antarctic Ambitions

China as a Great Polar Power
China as a Great Polar Power

China鈥檚 aims in the North and South Poles are less well understood than its Eurasian and African strategies, but are becoming increasingly consequential. In the Arctic, China wants to be a major player in order to gain shorter sea routes to European markets. In the Antarctic, China鈥檚 presence and scientific investments dwarf those of the United States. China鈥檚 polar policies are viewed by Beijing as part of the 鈥淏elt and Road鈥 initiative that presents China as a benevolent global power.

In her new book, China as a Great Polar Power, Kissinger Institute & Polar Initiative Global Fellow and University of Canterbury scholar Anne-Marie Brady analyzes how China鈥檚 Arctic and Antarctic policies support its geopolitical aims and affect its relations with polar nations.
