A Conversation with Colombia鈥檚 Minister of Defense, Diego Molano
Environmental degradation in Colombia, one of the world鈥檚 most biodiverse countries, poses an ongoing challenge for government authorities and Colombian civilians. Deforestation alone increased by 8 percent between 2019 and 2020, driven in part by criminal groups engaged in drug trafficking, illegal mining, and other illicit activities. National parks have been especially at risk.
Minister Molano addressed the military鈥檚 role, together with the Ministry of Environment, national parks officials, and local governments, in environmental protection in Colombia. The conversation also touched on other issues important in the U.S.-Colombian security relationship.
