Expert Bio

Helen Stuhr-Rommereim is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian at Swarthmore College. Her research focuses on the relationships between social history, political theory, Russia鈥檚 revolutionary social movements, and cultural representation鈥攁nd, more broadly, on the history of Russian and Russophone literature. Helen is completing her first book, Democratizing Writing: Representation as Fiction and Politics in Reform-Era Russia, which examines how questions of aesthetic and political representation converge in prose works by the cohort of non-noble writers who came to prominence in Russia in the 1860s: the raznochintsy realists. Helen鈥檚 work has been published in and , and is forthcoming in Novoe literaturnoe obozrenie. With Vadim Shneyder, she is co-editing a special issue of Russian Literature on 鈥淭he Unknown 19th Century.鈥� Her research has been supported by grants from the Fulbright program, American Councils, and others. She received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.
