"Institutional Mistrust and Support for Democracy: Are Ghanaians Fed-up with Democracy?"
Project Summary
Ghana has won praise for its steady progress toward democratic consolidation, especially after successful transitions from one government to the other. Despite this positive assessment of democratic governance achievement some of the key findings of the most recent Ghana Afrobarometer survey (R6: circa 2014) suggest a decline in citizen support for democracy. At the same time there is mistrust for key institutions such as parliament, judiciary, the presidency, the Electoral Commission, local authorities, and the police, among others. The paper will identify some of the causes of the decline in citizen support for democracy. It will do so using a trend analysis across time. The paper will also use correlations to show relationship between variables as well as use multiple regression to explain some of the causes.
